8 Ways Doing Your Own Landscaping Costs Less

DIY Landscaping Can Be a Smart Investment

Landscaping is a smart way to enhance the value and appearance of your property and create new spaces to enjoy. Doing your own landscaping can save money, but it helps to understand your goals and the scope of various projects. A landscaping contractor can work with you to envision projects at all levels and better grasp requirements. Let’s look at six top ways that DIY landscaping costs less.

1. Work Together

The more the merrier. If you have friends and family members who enjoy gardening, exercise, outdoor work, DIY projects, or plain ol' socializing, ask them to help. You can get more landscaping finished in a shorter time frame.

The ability to hang out with folks may also act as a motivator for you to finish tasks such as planting flowers, cutting weeds, and mowing the lawn. The “work together” option is especially good if you have a heavy work life and many commitments. You don’t have to tackle the landscaping alone.

2. Choose Your Purpose

Know what you want from your landscaping and why, whether it’s to focus on sustainability, create a butterfly garden, give the kids whimsical play space, grow vegetables and herbs, or meditate outside. Assess the available space and your landscape’s existing features (trees, boulders, etc.) for guidance as you decide where you can cut costs and where you might have significant expenses.

3. Prioritize Inexpensive Plants, Rocks, and Other Materials

Many times, it is fine to skip the most expensive flowers in a gardening center for those that cost less. The same goes for rocks, fountains, and other decorative materials. As always, do research on the products you are considering.

List the items you want to include, and read reviews on the affordable ones. Some may not be good quality, but many will be. It takes some due diligence to identify which is which but is doable.

4. View It as an Investment

Handling your own landscaping requires equipment. At a minimum, you should have a lawnmower, shovel, saw, pruner, hand trowel, wheelbarrow, hose, garden rake, and leaf rake. They cover basic DIY landscaping.

For higher-level landscaping, you need gear such as string trimmers, hedge trimmers, and even leaf blowers. If you buy even more expensive equipment such as cultivators, tillers, augers, and pressure washers, view them as investments that pay for themselves over time. If you are unsure you want to continue doing your own landscaping, it may be best to rent these tools only when you need them.

5. Improve What You Have

Rather than tear down fences, decks, and the like, improve them. For example, repairing, repainting, and sealing are smart ways to upgrade your existing infrastructure for an inexpensive price. Perform regular cleaning, pressure washing, and maintenance to keep the different parts of your landscape functional and in good shape.

Along the same lines, if you have large rocks or boulders in your yard, try to work with them rather than remove them. You could create a rock garden or a unique flower garden. The same idea applies to trees and other features that are costly to remove or uproot.

6. Visit Residential and Commercial Suppliers

Shop at garden centers and landscaping supply stores to enhance the natural elements of your landscape. For example, polished black river rock can do wonders for revamping the look of a yard. Decorative stones, rocks, pebbles, sand, and gravel can be combined with other materials to give your gardens the vibe you seek. A Zen garden, for example, requires gravel, larger rocks or boulders, plants, landscape fabric, a shovel, a pruner, a rake, and a garden hose, among other materials.

7. Buy Locally

Buying online could go awry because you risk purchasing plants and materials not suited to your zone and climate. On the other hand, local stores sell only plants and materials suited to your zone.

8. Stick With Your Limitations

Doing the bulk of landscaping yourself can save a pretty bundle of cash, but listen to your gut if it tells you that an ambitious project you are considering exceeds your abilities. Landscape contractors have tremendous expertise and efficiently handle projects involving, say, pergolas, decks, patios, retaining walls, lighting options, irrigation systems, fountains, and water features if you feel you are better suited for a different type of landscaping work.
