4 Landscape Design Ideas For Your Yard in Sonoma County

Located in Sonoma County, Santa Rosa, CA, is known for being one of the best spots in Wine Country. The area is beautiful, provides plenty of retail and entertainment opportunities, and is thriving with young families and singles alike. It's no wonder that so many people want to call the area home.

There is a downside, though. The dry climate sees only about 76 days of prescription in the average year, which means it is susceptible to drought and even fires. That doesn't mean you can't have beautiful landscaping, though. There is a range of gorgeous trees and shrubs that not only look amazing but provide fire protection for your landscape design Santa Rosa.

1. Lemonade Sumac Trees

Native to California, Lemonade Sumac Trees are evergreen shrubs that grow up to 20 feet tall and 20 feet wide. The decorative foliage is used to dry environments and creates gorgeous pink and white flowers during the spring months. During the winter, these flowers morph into edible orange berries. As an added bonus, the shrub creates waxy, fire-resistant leaves that can provide a protective barrier when planted near your home.

Lemonade Sumac Trees only need a small amount of irrigation to thrive, making them optimal for dry environments. They also create plenty of shade when planted near your home, which can lead to lower energy bills during the hot summer months. They can thrive in full or partial sun and once established, only need to be watered one or two times during the summer months.

2. Western Redbud Trees

Another gorgeous tree native to California, Western Redbud Trees bloom with bright pink flowers during the month of February. The flowers are edible and people claim they taste a bit like snow peas. They are also an excellent source of pollen for bees.

These trees, which thrive best when they have access to a bit of shade, can grow to be up to 10 feet wide and 20 feet tall. They are recommended for landscape design Santa Rosa by Cal Fire because they are small enough that they won't provide a lot of fuel or burn very hot if they come into contact with fire. Western Redbud Trees are deciduous, which means they'll drop their leaves in the late fall, adding organic matter to your soil and making it healthier.

3. Indian Fig Cacti

While Indian Fig Cacti aren't trees, they are still quite beautiful as landscaping, and you can't beat the ability of cacti to thrive in dry environments. Indian Fig Cacti grow as tall as 15 feet and as wide as 10 feet. A widely cultivated prickly pear, these cacti are not as spiny as other species but do produce tiny spines known as glochids, so it is important to peel both fruit and pads before eating. The pads, which are called nopales, are a popular food in Mexico. Even if you don't like the fruits, these cacti are an excellent source of food for birds.

Indian Fig Cacti absorb and hold plenty of water and are incredibly fire-resistant. Plant them in full sun and well-draining soil to make the most of this landscaping technique. They will stay alive even without additional water, but occasional irrigation can keep them looking fresh during the summer months. Keep in mind that these cacti can grow and spread via fallen pads. If you want to keep a cohesive landscape design Santa Rosa, you'll want to pick up fallen pads to prevent overgrowth.

4. Toyon Shrubs

If you'd like something a little smaller for your landscape design Santa Rosa, consider Toyon Shrubs. Also known as Christmas Berries, these shrubs typically only grow to about 8 feet tall and 5 feet wide. Native in areas from Baja, California, to Southern Oregon, the plants' bright red berries add a pop of color to otherwise dull winter landscapes. During the summer, they bloom white flowers that bees and butterflies are highly attracted to. They can grow in both shade or full sun, making them a great choice for any area of your home.

Toyon Shrubs produce berries that provide an excellent food source for birds and when cooked, are edible for humans as well. These decorative plants do not require much water but can be made even more fire-resistant with irrigation once or twice each summer.
