Tips to Successfully Install a Pergola For Outdoor Living

If you’re trying to utilize your outdoor space with your family and friends, you may be considering an outdoor structure to increase your comfort. Pergolas are one of many covered outdoor structures that add beauty and shade to your garden to make it more appealing. Here are some things to consider before installing a pergola.

What Is a Pergola?

Pergolas are a type of patio cover, usually made from wood, that creates a separate outdoor space with shade and an area to sit. Pergolas are generally attached to another structure, such as your home or a shed, but they can be free-standing. A pergola can have a closed or latticed roof. Commonly, pergolas are draped with vines or some kind of flora to allow some sun to come through. A pergola can enhance the landscaping in your garden while protecting you against the elements so you can enjoy your outdoor space.

Choose Where To Locate Your Pergola

Before you ever prepare a site for the pergola, you must determine that site. Talk to your landscaping contractor about possible locations. You’ll want a space that is at least 8 feet by 8 feet, but you can choose a site up to 20 feet by 20 feet. Think about how you like to enjoy your yard. Do you want to watch the sunrise or enjoy a sunset? Look for a location in your garden that won’t accumulate water after a rain, no low-lying areas. Choose an area where there is enough room to maneuver adequately. Watch for landscaping impediments, such as young trees that might affect the pergola as they grow larger. Mark out the base with garden stakes.

Consider Site Lines

Not only do you want to have a nice view from the pergola, you also want to make sure that your pergola won’t block your views from your home. When you’ve staked out the base for the pergola, put up a post that represents the height of the pergola, usually 8 to 12 feet. Go inside your home, and check out the windows to see if the structure blocks the views from the windows on both the first and second stories.

Check Building Requirements

You may need a building permit, depending on the laws in your area. Check with your county or municipality before building to save yourself time and money. Check any HOA regulations as well. You don’t want to invest in a pergola only to find out the HOA isn’t happy. If you need to lay a foundation for the pergola by digging up the ground and pouring concrete, you’ll want to make sure to have the utility representatives locate gas lines, water lines and any other buried utility lines that could be impacted by your installation.

Choose Your Pergola Material

Traditionally, pergolas were made of wood. Cedar or redwood are great choices, but there are many types of woods that make beautiful pergolas in different styles. Tropical hardwoods can provide a more modern style while pine may be more rustic. Today, there are also landscape contractors that install pergolas using tubular vinyl, cellular PVC or even aluminum metal materials. These materials don’t have the timeless look of wood, but they won’t require as much maintenance.

Determine If You Want Upgrades

You can include add-ons and upgrades to your pergola to make your backyard even better. Lighting, fans and outlets give you more comfort and might even get your teens outside with you. You’ll want to plan for those items and hire a licensed electrician for installation. If a ceiling fan doesn’t cool you enough, a patio misting system can provide even more comfort. Some people add moveable shades that give more control over sun and shade.
