What To Know About Smart sprinklers: Orbit B-Hyve and Rachio 3

Unkept landscaping may result in some funny looks from your neighbors. However, typical homeowners take pride in their home's landscaping. In fact, many homeowners invest time and money into their property's landscaping as a hobby and for aesthetics. As such, a responsible owner will research vegetation tools and invest money into purchasing high-quality tools such as smart sprinklers. Two of the most common smart sprinklers on the market that water landscapes across the country are the Orbit B-Hyve and Rachio 3. While both products are smart sprinklers, there are several notable differences between the two.

Differences and Similarities in Hardware

Creating an original landscaping design is a chance for you to get creative. All you need is the appropriate tools and hardware to make your vision come true. When it comes to hardware, there are several key similarities between the Orbit B-Hyve and Rachio 3. First, both smart sprinklers come with a 2-year buyer warranty and are relatively easy to install. Both smart sprinklers come with a controller that is easy to plug in. After the controller is plugged in, you may sync it with each sprinkler's respective mobile apps. The mobile app will guide you through the rest of your smart sprinkler setups.

One of the key hardware differences between the two sprinklers is influenced by the zones in your yard. The Orbit B-Hyve is only available in 6 or 12 zones while the Rachio 3 is available in 8 or 16 zones. Additionally, the Orbit B-Hyve has an LCD screen for easy viewing and control, while the Rachio 3 does not have any such feature. More so, the Orbit B-Hyve comes with weatherproof gear while owning the Rachio 3 will make you purchase weatherproof gear separately.

Differences and Similarities in Technological Features

Both smart sprinklers' technological features are accessible through the mobile app. Fortunately, both the Orbit B-Hyve and the Rachio 3 offer apps for IOS and Android users. When it comes to technological features, both mobile apps operate similarly by allowing users to manage landscape zones. More so, most apps are notably user-friendly and easy to navigate. Both apps permit users to create schedules for their watering times and provide useful information on water use and pricing.

Of course, there are several key differences between the sprinkler's mobile counterparts and other technological features. The Rachio 3 is known to have better user communication than its competition since it notifies users when the sprinkler turns on and off. Additionally, there are slight differences between information provided regarding water pricing and use. There are differences between the ways both mobile applications allow users to set up schedules for their sprinklers.

The two smart sprinklers also differ in terms of technological compatibility with voice-operated smart devices. While the Orbit B-Hyve and the Rachio 3 can both be controlled by Google Assitant and Alexa, the Rachio 3 is compatible with many more smart systems. On top of Alexa and Google Assitant, the Rachio 3 may pair with SmartThings, Alarm.com, Nest, Wink, and other smart technologies.

Differences and Similarities in Overall Functionality

The Orbit B-Hyve and the Rachio 3 offer users advanced functions geared towards efficiency. For example, both smart sprinklers will change a user's set schedule by monitoring weather data that will impact how much water your landscape's vegetation will receive. You may even choose which weather station you prefer your smart sprinkler gathers information from on both the Orbit B Hyve and Rachio 3 mobile apps. Even if your weather station provides your sprinkler with inaccurate forecasting data, both sprinklers have rain sensors that will turn on and off based on what it detects. Lastly, both smart sprinklers are EPA WaterSense certified. An EPA WaterSense certification ensures that consumers will save money on their energy bills and may even receive rebates depending on where they live.

When it comes to functionality, the Orbit B-Hyve and the Rachio 3 are incredibly similar and do not have any major differences. The key difference between the two when considering functionality involves the influence of third-party sensors. The Orbit B Hyve will only work with the Orbit Wireless Rain or Freeze Sensor while the Rachio 3 is much more flexible and not limited to a specific third-party sensor.

Taking Care of Your Landscape

A home's vegetation is arguably the most important landscaping feature of a property. For most people, the Orbit B-Hyve and the Rachio 3 are both efficient smart sprinklers that will serve consumers well. Still, landscaping is complicated and will require more work and purchases that go outside of sprinklers. Much more goes into landscaping than simply watering your vegetation.
